Il y a longtemps que je t’aime (2008) – [rate 3]
This was a good watch and I enjoyed it, but the story didn’t really speak to me in that special way your favourite movies do. I think part of it were just the characters that were a bit hard to identify with, but what caught my eye most – in a negative sense – was the directing of the actors in some scenes.
The actors’ performances in this movie aren’t bad and some actually pretty good, but you can tell the influence of the director in many scenes and it’s not always a good one. Also, the plot is driven by some strange coincidences and some of these are even plain superfluous, not as much driving the plot as getting in the way of it and not really offering any valuable background either.
The development of the story is nice though and the atmosphere believable. The movie has been beautifully scored and if you generally enjoy the typical French drama, this one comes recommended.
